Frequently Asked Questions

  • Medical care is complex, and an individual’s needs are unique and ever changing. A family physician is trained to provide thoughtful, comprehensive care that considers each patient’s goals, preferences, and needs. This understanding provides the framework for the desired outcomes that are to be achieved.

  • DocScott believes that the traditional medical system impedes a family physician’s ability to deliver the kind of care that his patients need and deserve. Insurer-driven healthcare creates pressures that interfere with the patient-physician relationship. Visits are rushed and focused on rigid checklists and templates with repetitive Q&A. This creates “blind spots” which compromises the quality of care. In Direct Primary Care, there is no middleman, and this means fewer distractions and more time and flexibility. As a result, the care is more personal, thoughtful, and responsive.

  • Direct Primary Care (DPC) involves a monthly membership fee. The membership fees are affordable and similar in price to having a streaming entertainment service. Individual membership costs only $2/day. Family memberships are discounted. Membership provides unlimited access to a personal physician, offering convenience and piece of mind. It is like having a doctor in your pocket. Members are strongly encouraged to carry health health insurance for their other healthcare needs (e.g., expensive diagnostic testing, procedures, specialist referrals, ER visits, hospitalizations, prescription drugs). An investment in primary care saves money by keeping people healthier, by facilitating early detection of disease, and by delaying/preventing the progression of chronic disease.

  • This is where it gets a little tricky. The rules around providing care to Medicare patients do not allow a physician to accept cash payment for “covered services.” Furthermore, the rules do not allow a Direct Primary Care provider to enroll a Medicare patient in monthly membership unless he “opts out” of Medicare. That means that if a “covered service” is needed, then the patient with Medicare will have to schedule with a provider who accepts Medicare and bills Medicare directly. What does DocScott recommend? As confusion on this topic is to be expected, I recommend that you give me a call if you have questions, and I will be happy to discuss this further.

“Dr. Maanum has always treated my family with patience and care, listening first to our needs. He wants to learn about your life situation, not just your medical history.”
